Goyal says India could become a global car manufacturing hub
India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India could become a global hub for making cars.
Speaking at The Dilli Dialogue, he argued that regulations in Europe make it harder for carmakers there to compete.
He predicted that European manufacturers would choose to produce cars in India.
Goyal did not specify which European Union regulations he meant.
India and some other countries have raised concerns about the EU’s carbon border adjustment mechanism, which concerns carbon emissions linked to imports.
India has offered tariff concessions for goods under trade agreements with the United Kingdom and the European Union.
Goyal also said his ministry was targeting $1 trillion in exports this fiscal year; exports reached $215.91 billion from April to August, up 17.85% from a year earlier.
