Orange and Onivia negotiate new deal for Spain's fibre networks

Orange Spain and Onivia are negotiating a new commercial deal covering Orange's use of Onivia's fibre networks in Spain.

Onivia is a major independent wholesale provider of fibre-to-the-home networks, which other telecom companies can use.

The relationship began in 2019, when MásMóvil, later merged with Orange's Spanish business, sold fibre networks to Onivia and agreed to use them for 20 years.

The talks could lead to Onivia buying Orange's 49% stake in Uclés, a company holding other fibre network assets.

The companies also aim to extend and align their contracts to 25 years from now, rather than having different end dates.

In return, Orange is seeking a substantial cut in its monthly network rental costs, alongside a commitment to send Onivia a minimum number of customers.

The talks have slowed because Spain's competition regulator is considering higher prices for Telefónica's underground ducts, which could raise costs for Orange and Onivia; no final agreement has been announced.
