Cardiff singer Cate McHugh wins The Voice UK

Cate McHugh won The Voice UK, the ITV singing competition, after beginning her career busking in Cardiff as a teenager.

The 31-year-old is from Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan and has a degenerative sight condition that has left her registered blind.

Sir Tom Jones coached McHugh in his final appearance on the show, after saying he had been offered a much smaller role and was not pleased with it.

McHugh's win brings a £50,000 prize and a recording contract, and her first single is a cover of The Beatles' song “Blackbird.”

The final's winner was chosen by the studio audience because the series was pre-recorded, so viewers at home could not vote.

Jones and three other main cast members are leaving, and the next series will have new coaches Aitch and Cheryl and new hosts Alesha Dixon and Stacey Solomon.

McHugh thanked people who followed her journey and said she had not yet fully processed the win.

They are offering a much-reduced role where I would make an appearance but without being actually involved from the start, and I'm not thrilled about that.

So the only thing I know right now is that there's never a good time to fire an 86-year-old who's still pretty good at his job.
