Ukraine detains Russian soldier after five troops are killed in Kharkiv region

Five Ukrainian soldiers were shot dead on October 13 in Kutuzivka, a village in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region.

The victims served in the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, and a man in civilian clothes opened fire with an automatic weapon.

Ukraine’s Security Service says it detained a 36-year-old Russian soldier from St. Petersburg, who had previously been convicted in Russia.

The agency has not said whether he was a prisoner of war, and accounts that the attacker escaped captivity had not been confirmed.

The motive remains unknown, and Ukrainian authorities are examining several possible explanations, including possible Russian involvement.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities yet to publicly establish the suspect’s role or explain why the attack happened.
