End of SonntagsBlick puts Swiss newspaper delivery jobs at risk
SonntagsBlick will stop publishing at the end of the year, after almost 60 years as a Sunday newspaper in Switzerland.
Its closure is part of a wider decline in printed newspaper circulation, which is making early-morning delivery work harder to sustain.
Presto, Switzerland’s largest early-delivery company, expects to cut up to 70 jobs, while nearly 500 staff are expected to receive new contracts with changed routes or hours.
Other delivery firms also expect changes as some newspaper distribution shifts from Sunday to Saturday, though CH Media says it aims to keep staffing as stable as possible.
NZZ am Sonntag and Sonntagszeitung will remain Sunday papers, and Presto says Sunday delivery will continue.
With fewer newspapers sharing printing and delivery costs, those costs may rise for the remaining Sunday titles.
Federal support for early-morning delivery is planned from next year, but it is not clear whether this will reverse the pressure on the sector.

What people are saying
For those affected, this is not an easy situation.
It is an important part of the budget. There are many people who receive a pension or are already retired and continue working simply because that pension is not enough to live on.
The goal is to keep staffing levels as stable as possible.
