Rome’s Regina Elena cancer institute joins early-trial network

Rome’s Regina Elena cancer institute has joined START, an international network focused on early-stage cancer trials.

The partnership brings together START’s trial experience and the clinical and research expertise of Rome’s IFO hospitals.

It aims to widen access to experimental treatments for eligible patients in Rome, the Lazio region and across Italy.

Early-stage trials test new cancer treatments at an early point in their development.

The network has more than 45 lead investigators across 17 sites in the United States and Europe.

Italy records about 390,000 new cancer diagnoses each year, while clinical trial activity relative to its population is lower than in several other large European countries.

The partnership is intended to bring more patients into clinical research and strengthen links between treatment and innovation.
