Divers find a missing German U-boat wreck in the English Channel
Divers found a German U-boat wreck in the English Channel off southwest England, after it had been missing for 82 years.
The wreck is identified as U-672 by one account, while another calls it U-627.
It sank in July 1944 after a British attack, about 30 kilometres off the English coast.
All 52 crew members survived: they escaped the sinking boat and were taken prisoner by British forces.
A wartime record gave the wreck’s position about 74 kilometres from where it was found, and one account says the map listed it as a First World War sailing ship.
German U-boats were used to attack supply routes to Britain, and the discovery helps correct the record of one of those wartime losses.
