Canada to begin rolling out instant-payment system on Nov. 9

Canada plans to begin rolling out its Real-Time Rail system on Nov.

9.

Developed by Payments Canada, the system is designed to let people and financial institutions send money that clears immediately.

Canada is currently the only G7 country without an instant-payment rail.

The project has been in development since 2015 and missed its original target launch in 2019.

The first phase’s participating institutions have not been named, and earlier reports said the country’s largest banks might not join it.

A think tank estimates the system could bring $3.2 billion in economic gains over its first five years by reducing payment delays and replacing inefficient methods.

The government also plans a consultation on payment priorities in early 2027 and a pilot using voluntary digital credentials to help fight identity fraud.
