Falcons hand 49ers their first loss of the season

The Atlanta Falcons beat the San Francisco 49ers 29-20 in Atlanta on Sunday, giving San Francisco its first loss of the season.

The 49ers had led by 11 points, but they could not hold their lead.

Four San Francisco turnovers, including three inside Atlanta's 30-yard line, helped the Falcons take control.

Atlanta scored 13 points off those turnovers, and quarterback Michael Penix Jr threw three touchdown passes.

San Francisco also gave away yards with penalties and struggled on special teams.

Linebacker Fred Warner said the team had taken a step back rather than improving.

The 49ers were set to head into their bye after the game, giving them a break before their next chance to respond.
