Man arrested over alleged sexual assault at Madrid’s Puerta del Sol camp
Spanish police arrested a 26-year-old man early Sunday over an alleged sexual assault at the Puerta del Sol encampment in Madrid.
Police say he entered a tent where a 22-year-old woman was sleeping and touched her without consent.
Another camper challenged him, and a confrontation followed; accounts differ on who was involved and the extent of the reported injury.
The encampment has housed thousands of young people for 29 days as part of a protest over Spain’s housing crisis.
This is the first reported arrest over an internal conflict at the camp, and the most serious incident described there so far.
Organizers have urged campers to consider scaling down the protest and leaving the plaza, but no withdrawal is confirmed.
