U.S. Marine indicted over robbery and murder of woman in Okinawa

A U.S. Marine has been indicted over a woman's robbery and murder in Okinawa.

The killing took place on October 3 in Naha, where the woman was strangled and valuables were stolen.

Okinawa's governor protested to the Japanese and U.S. governments after the case drew a strong response on the island.

U.S. forces imposed a 48-hour restriction on going out and a 30-day ban on late-night outings.

Those measures have not ended debate over how to prevent such crimes by U.S. service members in Okinawa.

The case has also renewed discussion about the U.S. Marine presence on the island, with one commentary arguing that withdrawing the Marines would be the most effective solution.
