El Sisi orders study of emergency reserves for Egypt

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has ordered a study of strategic reserves to help the country handle emergencies.

The task was given to a newly created authority led by army Chief of Staff Gen Mohammed Abdel Rahman Rabia.

The order comes amid fears that renewed fighting involving Iran and the United States could disrupt supply routes.

Egypt has so far been largely spared the hostilities, but a drone strike set a gas tanker ablaze at the port of Damietta in July.

The country has also prepared for possible threats near the Red Sea and Suez Canal, and has announced plans to deploy troops to Saudi Arabia, though their arrival has not been confirmed.

Egypt says its essential food reserves can last six months, and a state importer recently bought five cargoes of wheat.

The new authority is to work with government institutions as it studies how reserves could help the country respond to emergencies.
