Spanish farming groups plan Madrid tractor protest over rising costs
Three Spanish farming groups plan a tractor protest in Madrid this Wednesday to press the government for action on rising costs.
Asaja, COAG and Unión de Uniones say higher production expenses and low prices are threatening farms’ ability to make a living.
They want a package of measures, including lower-cost agricultural fuel, fairer contracts and less paperwork.
They also want sufficient funding for the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy in its 2028–2034 budget and stronger safeguards against unfair competition in trade deals.
The fourth major farming group, UPA, will not join because it plans to focus its demands on regional and European matters ahead of the November 29 election.
Agriculture Minister Luis Planas said he respects peaceful protests and noted that the government has approved €1.134 billion in aid so far.
Negotiations over the next EU farm policy remain a key concern, and Planas said the European Commission’s proposal does not meet Spain’s needs.

Their demands include support for production costs, fair prices, a sufficiently funded EU agricultural policy and fewer rules and paperwork.
The protest is due to end outside the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.
