Brazil’s apple harvest reaches a record as exports grow

Brazil produced a record 1.6 million tonnes of apples this season, according to the industry association.

Once reliant on imported apples, the country now sells its fruit in at least 93 overseas markets.

Exports from January to September reached 49,000 tonnes, up 274% from the same period last year, though the sector’s goal of selling 100,000 tonnes abroad was disrupted by geopolitical conflicts, especially in the Middle East.

The two main growing states, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul, account for 90% of production.

More fruit at home helped reduce supermarket and market prices in São Paulo by 16% from January to September, while apple imports fell 41% from 2025.

The outlook for the 2026/27 harvest is positive after a strong winter and abundant flowering, but conditions could still affect the crop.

Gala and Fuji apples are expected to be harvested in early 2027, and exporters are looking at Mexico and Malaysia as possible markets.
