China and Botswana raise ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership

China and Botswana upgraded their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership during talks in Beijing on October 13.

Chinese President Xi Jinping met Botswana President Duma Boko, who was making a state visit to China.

The two countries said they would deepen cooperation in trade, agriculture, digital technology and education, among other areas.

They also signed cooperation documents covering the Belt and Road Initiative, green minerals, health and human resources.

Xi said mining cooperation should respect African ownership of resources and support local development.

The partnership sets a broader framework for the countries to work together as Botswana pursues economic and social development.

The leaders also issued a joint statement, but no further steps or timetable were specified.
