DAX investors grow more uncertain even as optimism rises
A weekly survey of more than 10,000 private investors found mixed feelings about Germany’s DAX stock index.
The latest results showed uncertainty rising after recent market losses, while overall sentiment fell only slightly and remained far from panic.
At the same time, optimism about the next three months increased, even as investors’ willingness to buy shares fell to its lowest level since mid-August.
Many investors are already heavily invested, so the survey analyst said their optimism may leave them with little room to absorb another market drop.
In past cases of similarly low investor confidence, the DAX rose by an average of just over 8% in the following six months, though that pattern does not guarantee a rise now.
The analyst said no clear market bottom has formed, because investors have not yet given up on their holdings.
He advised caution before upcoming central bank decisions in the United States and the euro zone, and suggested favoring companies with low financing needs.
A survey of DAX investors found that uncertainty has risen even as expectations for the market have become more optimistic.
The sentiment reading slipped from minus 11.8 to minus 13.4 points, while expectations rose from 15.0 to 19.0 points.
Self-confidence fell to 1.30 points, its lowest level since the end of March, and buying readiness dropped to its lowest level since mid-August.
Analyst Stephan Heibel said many optimistic investors already have money invested, leaving little safety net if prices fall further.
He advised investors to hold back on investments ahead of upcoming central bank decisions in the United States and euro zone.
