Chile approves faster deportation process for undocumented migrants

Chile’s Congress approved a law to speed up deportations of people living in the country without legal status.

The law would let police ask a judge for permission to enter a home solely to arrest someone who has an expulsion order.

Public agencies could also be asked to share information about undocumented people so authorities can notify them of those orders.

The measure was first proposed in 2024 by former president Gabriel Boric and later revived by President José Antonio Kast, who took office in March.

Kast campaigned on removing more than 330,000 people estimated to be in Chile without legal status, but his government deported about 1,800 people in its first six months.

Most undocumented migrants in Chile are Venezuelan, and strained relations with Venezuela have hindered deportations; the two countries agreed to restore ties in July, but that has not yet led to more removals of Venezuelans.
