159 Managers Resign Ahead of 8,000 Indonesian Village Cooperatives’ Launch
159 managers have resigned from Indonesia’s Merah Putih village and urban-ward cooperatives ahead of their planned launch.
The cooperatives are part of a government effort to serve communities, and 8,000 are still due to begin operating this week, Agrinas’ chief said.
Agrinas is the state-owned company involved in the program, and its chief said the resignations caused no loss to the state, despite spending on basic military training for managers.
Food Minister Zulkifli Hasan said nearly 29,000 cooperatives had reached the stage of preparing for construction, while about 8,000 were being equipped.
They are being prepared to supply goods such as fertilizer, sugar, cooking oil and LPG, with vehicles checked for their ability to deliver them.
The cooperatives are also intended to help distribute one million tonnes of rice aid to 33.2 million people in the lowest four income groups.
Agrinas chief Joao Angelo De Sousa Mota said 159 managers of Indonesia’s Merah Putih village cooperatives had resigned.
The resignations came ahead of the planned launch of 8,000 cooperatives.
The government said the 8,000 cooperatives would begin operating on October 15, while monitoring their readiness across Indonesia.
Officials said about 29,000 cooperatives had reached a stage of readiness, against a target of 35,000 by year-end.
The cooperatives are being equipped with essential and subsidized goods, including fertilizer, cooking oil, LPG and rice.
