Channel 4 cancels Married at First Sight UK after rape allegations
Channel 4 has cancelled Married at First Sight UK after allegations of rape and sexual misconduct involving former contestants.
The claims concern women paired with men on the British reality show, where couples meet at mock weddings and are filmed as they try to build relationships.
Three women made allegations, which the men involved deny; one woman said her onscreen husband raped her and threatened her with an acid attack.
Channel 4 commissioned two external reviews of the show’s welfare procedures, while police and courts remain responsible for determining the allegations.
The reviews found no breach of Ofcom’s code, but identified areas where welfare protections and procedures could be strengthened.
A separate review said future seasons could be made with changes, including safeguards such as panic buttons, but Channel 4’s chief executive said the show had run its course.
A filmed season and a planned spin-off will not air, and earlier seasons remain off Channel 4’s streaming service.
