Italian homes with central heating face remote-reading deadline in 2027

From 1 January 2027, Italian homes with central heating must use remote-reading heat devices under a national law.

The rule affects heat meters, also called heat allocators, fitted to individual radiators; it does not concern ordinary gas or electricity meters.

Devices installed after 25 October 2020 already need remote-reading technology, while older ones may need a radio module or replacement.

The change aims to measure household heat use more accurately instead of relying on estimates at the end of the year.

Replacing a device is estimated to cost €120 to €190 per radiator, and a 50% tax deduction may be available for qualifying condominium work.

Owners whose devices do not comply may face fines of €500 to €2,500, with wider condominium penalties possible if other installation rules were broken.

Owners should check their equipment before the deadline and arrange any needed upgrade.
