Man gets 100 hours of community service for stealing boat on Urk

A court found an Arnhem man guilty of stealing a boat and trailer on Urk on 23 July.

The boat and trailer were worth about €10,000.

Camera footage showed a white Skoda arriving at the unattended boat, after which the man and another person hitched the trailer and drove away.

The man admitted attaching the trailer but said they meant to hire a small boat and took the wrong one.

The judge rejected that account, noting that the supposed contact denied arranging a hire and that the boat looked more like a speedboat than a small boat.

The court imposed 100 hours of community service, with 40 hours suspended, and set a two-year probation period.

A claim for €3,000 in compensation was rejected because it was not sufficiently supported.
