UNESCO advisory body recommends Japan's shodo calligraphy for heritage list

A UNESCO advisory body recommended adding Japan's shodo calligraphy to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Shodo is a traditional art that uses kanji and kana characters, and Japan developed its own styles after calligraphy arrived from China.

The number of people practising shodo has fallen 30% in 10 years, while digital devices have reduced opportunities for handwriting.

UNESCO recognition could help support the passing on of this tradition.

A UNESCO committee is expected to make the formal decision at a meeting in Xiamen, China, from Nov.

30 to Dec.

5.

If approved, shodo would become Japan's 24th item on the list.
