Erdoğan-aligned religious foundation demands accountability over corruption
A religious foundation close to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has challenged his government over corruption, favoritism and weak oversight in Turkey.
The Aziz Mahmud Hüdayi Foundation, linked to the Erenköy religious community, called for accountability across government, business and civil society.
Its declaration followed a crisis in which some investment funds could not meet requests from investors to withdraw their savings.
Turkey’s securities regulator ordered the liquidation of 131 funds managed by seven companies to help repay investors.
Opposition politicians have questioned whether people with political connections were warned early and withdrew their money before others.
The foundation says confidence cannot return until those responsible answer for their actions, extending criticism into circles that have supported Erdoğan.
A business association official who backs the government publicly endorsed the declaration.
Interim repayments of up to 1 million lira are due to begin this month after parliament passes a law on liquidating the funds.
