Italy plans lower rental taxes for controlled rents and tenants aged 35 or under

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced lower rental taxes at a news conference after a cabinet meeting on the budget package.

The tax rate for homes rented under controlled-rent agreements is set to fall from 10% to 5%.

It would fall to 1% for tenants aged 35 or under renting under such an agreement.

The tax, known as cedolare secca, is charged on rental income.

Meloni said the lower rates are meant to encourage landlords to offer homes at controlled rents, especially to younger tenants, rather than charge market prices, leave homes empty or rent them illegally.

She said the aim is more homes available and lower rents, helping more young people move out of their family homes.
