Gaël Monfils named France's Davis Cup captain after retiring

Gaël Monfils has been named captain of France’s Davis Cup team shortly after retiring from professional tennis at 40.

He takes over from Paul-Henri Mathieu, who led the team for three years.

Former French players Gilles Simon and Richard Gasquet will support Monfils in the role.

Monfils won 588 matches and 13 ATP titles, and played for France in the Davis Cup from 2009 to 2019.

France has won the Davis Cup 10 times, but its most recent title was in 2017.

The team failed to qualify for this year’s Final 8 after losing 3-1 to Canada in the second round of qualifiers.

Monfils says he wants to build a strong team and help France win titles.
