Fitch keeps France’s debt rating at A+ but cuts outlook to negative
Fitch kept France’s debt rating at A+ but cut its outlook to negative on Friday.
The change reflects worsening public finances and higher borrowing costs, which Fitch says make it harder to control the country’s rising debt.
France’s 10-year government borrowing rate ended Friday at 4.97%, after passing 5% the previous week.
The French economy has also slowed, with output falling 0.1% in the third quarter after stagnating in the second.
Finance Minister Roland Lescure said the government must adopt a responsible budget by the end of the year, aiming to reduce the deficit to 5%.
France’s A+ rating remains supported by its large, diverse economy and strong institutions, as well as its membership in the eurozone and resilient banking sector.

The agency cited worsening public finances, higher borrowing costs and weaker growth as making sustained debt consolidation more difficult.
It also pointed to persistent political fragmentation and social tensions as obstacles to fiscal consolidation.
