India Sets Up Social Security Board for Gig and Unorganised Workers

India’s Labour Ministry has notified a national board for gig, platform and unorganised workers under the Code on Social Security.

Gig workers earn outside traditional employer-employee relationships, while platform workers do jobs through or with online platforms, such as delivery and ride-hailing apps.

The board brings these workers into formal social security policy, alongside other unorganised workers.

It will include representatives of central and state governments, companies, employers, civil society groups, unions and worker associations, and the Union labour minister will chair it.

The board will recommend welfare schemes and advise the government on applying the Social Security Code.

It will also monitor central government welfare programmes, review state-level records and examine spending, meeting at least three times a year.

No new benefits or funding have been announced; coverage of the notification differs on whether it creates one board or separate boards for unorganised workers and gig and platform workers.
