CATL and Intilion plan 3 GWh of sodium-ion storage in Europe by 2031

CATL and German provider Intilion agreed to install 3 GWh of sodium-ion energy storage in Europe by 2031.

The planned systems are for grid, commercial and industrial use in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

The companies have already deployed more than 30 energy storage projects in Germany, including systems using lithium-ion batteries.

Sodium-ion batteries use more abundant sodium and can perform better in cold conditions, making them a possible option for storing renewable power through harsh winters.

CATL says its system can provide more than 15,000 charge cycles over a 25-year lifespan and operate at temperatures as low as -20°C.

The agreement is a plan, not a completed rollout, and the systems are intended to expand the companies’ existing work together.

The companies aim to scale up adoption, with CATL’s sodium-ion storage solution expected to enter the European market this year.
