Québec names Pascal Paradis chief negotiator with Indigenous nations and US

Québec’s incoming premier, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, appointed Pascal Paradis as chief negotiator for the government.

Paradis, a former member of Québec’s legislature, lost his seat to Liberal candidate Julie White in the October 5 election.

He will work to maintain relations with Indigenous nations and lead government discussions on issues including energy and treaties.

He will also play a central role in Québec’s relations with the United States, including trade talks when needed.

The appointment does not mean St-Pierre Plamondon plans to negotiate directly with US officials; he says he wants Québec represented at the table.

Paradis has 25 years of international-relations experience, including two decades leading Lawyers Without Borders Canada.

He will report directly to the premier and work with the future ministers responsible for international relations and Indigenous affairs.
