Indonesia and China Agree to Expand Agricultural Cooperation

At a meeting in Beijing, Indonesia and China agreed to deepen agricultural cooperation on production, technology and trade.

Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman and China's Agriculture Minister Zhang Zhu discussed garlic, research, modern farming and investment.

About 90% of Indonesia's garlic needs are met by China, leaving the country reliant on imports for the crop.

Indonesia wants cooperation on seeds, farming methods, machinery and production areas to increase domestic output.

China offered technical discussions on garlic and proposed work on coffee, cocoa and palm oil, as well as research using drones, robots and artificial intelligence.

The aim is to raise local production and strengthen Indonesian exports, while also improving trade and investment between the countries.

China may organise a business delegation to explore investment opportunities in Indonesia, but no further timetable was given.
