OpenAI launches Images 2.6, with faster image generation and GIFs

OpenAI has launched Images 2.6, an updated image-generation model, replacing Images 2.5.

It is available worldwide in ChatGPT and Codex on free and paid plans, through web, desktop and mobile apps.

Image generation is 50% faster, and editing is designed to keep details such as clothing or product features consistent when other parts of an image change.

The update adds animated GIF creation, including looping animations made from written requests or uploaded sketches; users can adjust playback speed and share the GIFs.

A saved-reference feature lets users keep named photos and reuse them in later chats without uploading them again.

GIF creation is still rolling out, while the other features are available from launch.

For developers, OpenAI offers two API versions, one focused on speed and the other on image quality, with prices unchanged from Images 2.5.

OpenAI says its services generate about four billion images a week, and it has added safety checks for GIFs and SynthID digital watermarks to help identify generated images.
