John Goodman says alcohol and eating led him to weigh nearly 400 pounds

Actor John Goodman says he weighed nearly 400 pounds after quitting drinking in 2007, when he was 55.

He told The New Yorker that repeated cycles of losing and regaining weight had become exhausting.

Goodman said he was “eating alcoholically” after he stopped drinking, describing food as part of a pattern of seeking quick gratification.

He said drinking had caused severe problems, including shakes and hangovers, and that he was at risk of needing hospitalization when he decided to stop.

Goodman has since lost 200 pounds and said sobriety allowed him to enjoy life without relying on alcohol or other substances.

He also had stomach surgery to address his weight, which he said led to anemia and feeling cold.

After fracturing his hip last year, he is focusing on low-impact exercise, strength, balance and therapy to help prevent another fall.
