SK Eternix starts commercial operation at two fuel-cell plants

SK Eternix has started commercial operation at two fuel-cell power plants in Icheon and Paju, South Korea.

They are part of a project to add power generation near areas where electricity demand is expected to grow.

The project includes three sites, using Bloom Energy solid oxide fuel cells.

The plants will have a combined capacity of 28 megawatts and are expected to generate 222 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year, enough for about 53,000 homes.

Fuel cells can be built relatively quickly and need fewer location-specific conditions, making them one way to respond to rising demand.

The third plant in Paju is due to start operating in November, completing the project.
