Police find two pythons in car console in Amsterdam

Police in Amsterdam found two live pythons hidden in a car's center console after stopping a 51-year-old driver on the A4.

He was under the influence and arrested.

Officers called to move and search the car also found a box of live mice and a goldfish in a bag of water on the back seat.

Keeping pythons is legal in the Netherlands, and private transport within a certain distance does not require a permit.

But animal-welfare rules still apply, including a requirement for adequate ventilation.

The console did not provide enough ventilation, and the animals were taken to a shelter.
