Üsküdar deputy mayor Dündar Ziya Gültekin dies after road crash in Düzce
Üsküdar deputy mayor Dündar Ziya Gültekin died after a crash on the Anadolu Highway in Düzce, Turkey.
His car collided with another car travelling in the same direction near Kaynaşlı, on the route towards Ankara.
Four other people were injured and taken to nearby hospitals.
Officials said Gültekin received treatment at a private hospital but could not be saved; an AK Party official said a heart attack brought on by the shock of the crash was suspected, but this had not been confirmed.
Gültekin had been elected deputy mayor of Üsküdar, a district of Istanbul, after a vote by the municipal council.
The fatal crash leaves the district’s municipal leadership facing the loss of its deputy mayor, while the other injured people were reported to be in good condition.
