Urda train crash kills 69 as Spain’s transport minister faces scrutiny

A train crash in Urda, Toledo, has killed 69 people and injured more than 100.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a control-centre operator was responsible, after a track fault was followed by an order for a train to move.

Unions and several political groups say one worker’s mistake may not explain a failure in a complex safety system.

They have also raised concerns about signalling problems, maintenance and pressure on railway staff, while calling for a thorough investigation.

The crash has renewed debate about the safety of Spain’s high-speed rail network, especially after another deadly crash in January that killed 46 people.

Puente has ruled out an immediate resignation and plans to explain the crash to lawmakers on November 3.

The investigation is expected to establish what happened, while the crash has also disrupted train services and left passengers affected by line closures.
