Canton Fair opens its 140th edition, marking 70 years of trade

The 140th Canton Fair opened in Guangzhou on October 14, marking 70 years since the trade event began.

The fair brings Chinese businesses and international buyers together, and it has continued without interruption through 140 editions.

Its exhibits have shifted from basic goods to advanced products, including electric vehicles, smart robots and high-end equipment.

That change reflects China’s growth into a major manufacturing country and a move by some firms to offer technology and solutions as well as products.

The fair expanded to include imports in 2007, showing that it aimed to bring goods into China as well as sell Chinese products abroad.

It has developed from a platform for trading goods into a place for market connections, innovation and cooperation.

China says it wants wider trade cooperation, including protecting global supply chains and supporting the multilateral trading system; the fair is now open for its latest edition.
