Brazil approves automatic tax-debt relief for individual microentrepreneurs
Brazil has enacted automatic relief for individual microentrepreneurs’ federal tax debts under its Prospera MEI package.
The measure covers debts due by October 13, 2026, and could benefit about 3.6 million entrepreneurs with debts to the federal government.
These workers use a simplified business status called MEI, which has had a limit of R$81,000 in annual revenue.
Eligible debts will be cleared without an application, but entrepreneurs must pay their monthly MEI contributions on time for six months after the law takes effect or the relief will be cancelled.
People challenging the debts in court must withdraw their cases, while amounts already paid will not be refunded.
The package also raises the revenue limit to R$110,000 in 2027 and R$140,000 in 2028, and allows MEIs to hire up to two employees instead of one.
Brazil has approved automatic remission of qualifying tax debts owed by individual microentrepreneurs.
The measure covers debts due by 13 October 2026 and does not require an application.
About 3.6 million entrepreneurs with debts totalling R$12.57 billion may benefit.

What people are saying
O MEI não tem que fazer nada. Tem que comemorar.
A nossa expectativa é que, em poucos dias, a gente já consiga processar isso e que os MEIs já estejam zerados a partir de janeiro.
