IMF urges Argentina to turn financial stability into jobs and investment
The IMF urged Argentina to turn financial stability gains into jobs and investment to support stronger economic growth.
The advice came from IMF spokesperson Julie Kozack after talks between a technical mission and Argentina’s government.
The mission agreed to a possible $900 million loan release under a four-year, $20 billion IMF programme.
Argentina has curbed inflation and its public deficit, but private investment and domestic demand remain areas the IMF says need strengthening.
The IMF says job creation has not yet followed the government’s spending cuts, and an industry group reported about 90,000 jobs lost since August 2023.
The IMF also recommended more flexible labour rules and progress on recently granted infrastructure concessions.
The IMF board is expected to consider the loan release in early December; the IMF also advised Argentina to keep building up its net international reserves.
The IMF urged Argentina to use gains from financial stabilization to create jobs and attract investment.
Spokesperson Julie Kozack said the IMF and Argentine authorities shared the goal of turning stabilization gains into stronger growth and job creation.
The IMF mission reached a staff-level agreement with Buenos Aires for about $900 million in funding under a four-year program.
The IMF said Argentina had made impressive macroeconomic progress but still needed more private investment and domestic demand.
The proposed funding is expected to go to the IMF board for approval in early December.
