French TV coverage of 17 October protests draws criticism and regulator warning

A student and cost-of-living protest on 17 October was followed by criticism of how French television covered the demonstrations and violence in several cities.

France Télévisions drew complaints over a 12-minute report shown the next day that focused on violence without including protesters’ views.

The broadcaster’s news chief said the editing and context should have been clearer, while critics said coverage gave too little attention to the protesters’ demands.

Other channels also faced scrutiny: the DGSI denied a commentator’s claim on CNews that protesters had firearms, and comments made on LCI are to be examined by the regulator.

After receiving numerous complaints, Arcom urged television channels to be especially vigilant and to provide reliable, rigorous information.

The regulator will examine the LCI sequence, while broadcasters are preparing for another weekend of protests and heightened risks for news coverage.
