Banco BPM posts record €1.53bn profit in first nine months

Banco BPM earned €1.53bn in the first nine months, a record for the Italian bank and 2.6% more than a year earlier.

The bank said its performance benefited from varied revenue, cost controls and lower loan-loss provisions.

It plans to raise its dividend, with the payment for 2026 expected to exceed €1 per share and an interim payment of €0.50 per share.

Crédit Agricole, which owns 29.6% of Banco BPM, is its largest shareholder.

Banco BPM says it has received no merger proposal from Crédit Agricole, and chief executive Giuseppe Castagna said the bank would not make the first move.

If a proposal comes, Banco BPM says it will assess whether it benefits shareholders, including the other 70% of owners.

The bank expects net profit to exceed €1.95bn and plans to present a new strategic plan in the first half of next year.

We do not see any kind of proposal at this moment for a combination from Crédit Agricole, but if there is one, it is an opportunity we will examine without any problem.

Frankly, we are not the ones who will make the first move; it is up to them to decide the best way forward, if they decide to proceed.
