Petrobras confirms third oil discovery off Brazil’s Amapá coast

Petrobras found another oil-bearing rock layer in the Morpho well off Brazil’s Amapá coast.

The finding is the third discovery in the FZA-M-59 block, in the Equatorial Margin, after announcements in August and early October 2026.

The well lies in ultradeep water 2,886 metres deep, about 175 kilometres from Oiapoque and nearly 500 kilometres from the mouth of the Amazon River.

Petrobras has finished drilling and collecting geological data, but the discovery does not establish how much oil can be produced.

The company sees the region as important because it hopes new discoveries can help offset a future decline in production from Brazil’s pre-salt fields.

The rig will move to the Potiguar basin in Rio Grande do Norte to begin drilling at the Mãe de Ouro location.
