Sheinbaum calls for broad audit of Mexico’s electoral institute
President Claudia Sheinbaum urged a broad audit of Mexico’s National Electoral Institute, known as the INE.
She said the review should cover contracts and public spending under current head Guadalupe Taddei Zavala and her predecessor, Lorenzo Córdova.
The call follows allegations involving INE suppliers, including claims of irregular contracts and possible conflicts of interest; the claims have not been established as wrongdoing.
The institute’s internal control chief reportedly detected supplier payments to officials, staff members holding shares in companies, and omissions of up to 5.6 million pesos in asset declarations, but no complaints had been filed.
Sheinbaum wants the federal auditor to examine the records and says the INE’s internal control office should share its information.
Authorities should act if misconduct is proven, she said, while the INE’s incoming leadership should promote transparency.

What people are saying
What matters from my point of view is that a very broad audit be carried out by the Federal Superior Audit Office, not just of the last year, but of all the allegations that have been made
Everything must be reviewed; nothing can be left outside transparency
Let everything come to light, let there be transparency
There cannot be, as I said yesterday, even a shadow of a conflict of interest or corruption; it has to be opened up and made transparent
