Indonesia plans 30 additional new commuter trainsets

Indonesia's President Prabowo directed KAI to procure 30 new commuter trainsets for the country's electric commuter rail service.

The transport minister said Prabowo made the commitment when opening the renovated Tanah Abang station in Jakarta in November 2025.

The proposed 30 trains are separate from 35 trainsets KAI committed to in 2023.

The government previously said it could provide up to 5 trillion rupiah to support the new purchase, but the transport minister said he did not know the financing plan.

KAI and its supporting institutions will handle the purchase and funding details, rather than the transport ministry.

Officials say longer, wider trains could replace older, shorter ones and carry more passengers during crowded rush hours.

The sources give no procurement timetable or confirmed funding arrangement.

The most important thing is that the President is committed to providing or helping provide trains in line with the public’s expectations, along with the addition.

Apart from the 35 trainsets that have been PT KAI’s commitment since 2023, there is another presidential directive to procure 30 trainsets.

If the additional 30 trainsets can be brought in, with longer train formations, they can replace the KRL trains that are now old, with shorter formations and doors that sometimes have problems.
