South Korean opposition leader calls for probe into alleged Shincheonji link

Jung Jeom-sik called for Kim Min-seok to resign over an allegation involving Shincheonji members and the Democratic Party of Korea.

Kim, the party’s leader, apologized over claims of a secret alliance linked to the party’s August leadership election.

Kim did not announce the results of an internal inquiry into allegations that Shincheonji members joined the party in large numbers.

Jung, a floor leader for the rival People Power Party, said the apology did not settle the matter.

He argued that the allegation was either false or true, and said either possibility warranted an investigation.

Jung urged President Lee Jae Myung to order a joint police-prosecution investigation into the alleged alliance.

He also maintained that Kim should resign, but the sources do not say whether an investigation will be ordered or whether Kim will step down.
