Arizona solar-and-battery project will supply 90% of its power to Tesla
ContourGlobal has begun construction on Project Sterling, a solar farm with battery storage in Mohave County, Arizona, about 20 miles north of Lake Havasu City.
The project will cover more than 2,000 acres and include over 760,000 solar panels and more than 300 battery containers.
Its solar capacity is 509 megawatts in direct current, or 450 megawatts after conversion for the grid, while the batteries can store about 1.4 gigawatt-hours of electricity.
Tesla has signed a long-term agreement to buy about 90% of the facility’s expected output, or roughly 1 terawatt-hour of electricity each year.
The batteries can deliver full power for about four hours, and the combined system is designed to provide clean electricity for up to 16 hours a day.
The project is expected to begin operating in 2028 and will connect to a transmission network with access to California’s electricity market.
ContourGlobal expects construction to employ around 400 workers, and says Sterling will become its largest renewable energy asset worldwide.
