France tightens rules for retirees who return to work from 2027

France will tighten rules for new retirees who return to work from January 1, 2027.

The changes affect people who retire from that date and then take a job or work for themselves.

People who retire before the legal retirement age will have each euro they earn deducted from their pension the following year.

Those who retire at the legal age can keep their full pension until age 67 only if their annual earnings stay within a €7,000 gross limit.

Above that limit, their pension will be cut by half the amount they earn over it.

At age 67, retirees can receive their pension and work income without this penalty.

The government hopes the rules will encourage people to delay retirement and reduce costs for the national pension fund.

Some workers, including health professionals in areas with medical shortages and childminders, will have higher or no earnings limits; people who retired before 2027 remain under the older, more flexible rules.
