Apple cuts India production of standard iPhone 17 as demand weakens

Apple is cutting India-bound production of the standard iPhone 17 because demand in India has weakened.

The move comes after Apple raised prices of existing iPhone models in India by 20% to 29%, citing higher component costs and a weaker rupee.

The 256GB iPhone 17 now costs ₹99,900, up from ₹82,900 at launch, making it less attractive to buyers watching their spending.

Production capacity will be redirected to exports, where demand for the standard model remains strong, so the overall effect on production is expected to be limited.

Meanwhile, demand for iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro models remains strong in India, though some buyers may be responding to festive discounts.

Some consumers are delaying purchases while they wait for the iPhone 18, which retailers expect could launch in February; others are choosing older or refurbished phones.

Apple can adjust production as demand changes, and the company may increase capacity again if sales warrant it.
