Álvarez apologizes to Atlético fans after seeking Barcelona move
Julián Álvarez apologized to Atlético Madrid fans for saying during the World Cup that he wanted to leave the club for Barcelona.
The Argentina forward stayed at Atlético after the club blocked his departure, but his comments led to boos and criticism from some supporters.
He scored the winning goal in a 1-0 LaLiga victory over Deportivo La Coruña on Saturday.
It was his first league goal in eight months and came after he had scored twice in the four days before the match.
Álvarez said he regretted how he expressed himself and when he did so, and thanked fans for supporting him.
Coach Diego Simeone said the team needs Álvarez at his best to reach its goals.
Atlético moved to within two points of league leaders Barcelona ahead of Barcelona's match against Real Madrid on Sunday.
