Osaka’s Glico sign to be replaced with a new design in 2027
The Dotonbori Glico sign in Osaka will be replaced after its LED system began to age and replacement parts became harder to obtain.
Ezaki Glico, the confectionery company behind the landmark, said the current sixth-generation sign will be switched off on Nov.
30 before work begins.
The first sign was installed in 1935, and the current version has stood in Osaka since 2014.
The seventh-generation sign is due to be unveiled in spring 2027, with its new design still under wraps.
It will keep the familiar image of a runner raising both arms and use LED technology.
The company aims to improve energy efficiency, and the replacement matters because the sign is a popular landmark for visitors to Dotonbori.
During construction, the billboard will be covered, while the company considers ways for tourists to enjoy the site.
